“How do I know when I am ready to level up in my training?”
Today was our end of month Q&A and Live Coaching Zoom for my Slay Running athletes and this was one of the questions posed. And what a great question! As coaches, we use the data we have to make the best decisions possible in prescribing training and race paces, but it’s the data we get back that can help us make even more informed decisions.
But how do we get that data? Consistent training is the primary way.
Questionnaires are great. Previous and current race times can be extremely helpful, but the data of a consistent, dedicated athlete over time is like gold when it comes to making informed decisions about training and racing strategy.
Is an athlete running at the prescribed pace and their heart rate is much lower than expected? Is an athlete running at the prescribed heart rate zone and their pace is much faster than expected? Is the athlete’s perceived effort indicating they have a LOT more in the tank at the end of what should be a tough workout? If this becomes a trend, it may be time to level up and see the new results.
In running, as in life, consistency is king. In the words of Aristotle, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” If we want to improve or “excel”, then we must make it a habit. Not occasionally when we feel like it, but every single day.
Day after day, week after week, year after year we strive and reach for the next level. And when we catch our breath, we strive and reach for the next. And the pacing is important. For there is no end, just a continuous ebb and flow for those who dare to dream.
